Armistice Day

11

November 2023

Tongwynlais Community Council have placed poppies along Merthyr Road again this year to remember those fallen in service on Armistice Day.

This year, many of the poppies feature names of former Tongwynlais residents who died in service during World War 1 and 2. A commemorative plaque can be found inside St Michaels Church.

Special thanks to local artist Amelia Thomas for her artwork with the names, and to all volunteers who helped with decorating the village.

Giant Hogweed

16

June 2022

Please be aware of the dangers from Giant Hogweed which if come into contact with the sap can cause a sensitivity to the sun and result in burns and blistering.

Giant Hogweed is not a native UK plant, but grows in abundance to heights of between 1.5m to 5m tall with a spread of between 1m to 2m. Flowers appear in June and July and are small white or pinkish clusters on umbrella like heads which can reach a diameter of up to 60cm.

The best way to avoid injury is to familiarise yourself with the plants appearance and avoid brushing through patches of giant hogweed especially if the stems have been cut which may cause you to get sap on your skin.

If you do come into contact with the sap from giant hogweed wash the area immediately, seek medical advice and do not expose the area to sunlight for a few days.
